Hot Off the Grill: Special session continues on

With the exception of a few of the lead budget writers, the capitol has been empty of legislators as the second week of the special session comes to a close. But, there are some signs of progress. Marty Brown, the director of Office of Financial Management, has continued to meet with legislators from all four caucuses, and media accounts indicate that options are being discussed to address the $300-$400 million difference between the various proposals. It’s anyone’s guess when, or if, closure will be reached, but “rank and file” lawmakers are becoming increasingly frustrated. Continue reading

Member Advisory: I-1183 Upheld!!!

This afternoon, Cowlitz County Superior Court Judge Stephen Warning fully upheld the constitutionality of I-1183. Judge Warning reversed his March 2 decision in which he found that that one sentence in I-1183 (related to funding for public safety) violated the single subject requirement for any law enacted in Washington State. Restaurant industry celebrates liquor privatization milestone

The Washington Restaurant Association is pleased to recognize the first significant milestone in the implementation of Initiative 1183, which privatizes the sale and distribution of liquor and spirits in Washington state. Today, for the first time in 78 years, restaurants and bars are able to choose where they purchase their supply of liquor and spirits. Continue reading

Action Alert: Tell your legislators to oppose 0.5% sales tax on restaurants

The House budget being debated in the Legislature would allow local governments to impose a new, 0.5% sales tax on all restaurants, bars and taverns. Lawmakers are attempting to resolve budget challenges by shifting taxing decisions to local governments. Cities and counties would be granted new ability to raise your taxes! HB 2801 allows this new tax to be imposed. It is bad tax policy, bad for business and should be rejected.
